Don Quijote (Don Quejana; Knight of the Sad Face/Sorrowful Countenance)- A hidalgo from La Mancha who spends so much time reading tales of Chivalry that he makes up his mind to become a Knight Errant, just like in all the novels, and embark on his own series of adventures as if he were a character in a book. Perceived as mad by those he meets.

Riconante- The horse of Don Quijote
Dulcinea del Toboso (Aldonza Lorenzo)- Don Quijote’s lady to whom he pledges all of himself and for whom he saves others. Each person he “helps” he asks to go to Toboso and tell his Dulcinea how Don Quijote helped them.
Sancho Panza- a farmer and neighbor of Don Quijote whom Don Quijote persuades to act as his squire under the promise of giving him an island. Sancho is basically in entirely for what Don Quijote has told him he may gain, he has a difficult time finding a balance between the explanations Don Quijote has for everything, which do make sense, and the reality which he sees and experiences.
Master Nicolás- Village Barber and Friend of Don Quijote
Pero Pérez- Village Priest- Friend of Don Quijote; “learned man with a degree from a provincial university” (14)

Maritornes- the extremely nice prostitute at the inn who accidentally causes a brawl
Cardenio- a wealthy young man who went to work for Don Fernando’s father and befriended Don Fernando. After who then, under the guise of helping Cardenio, stole his lover Lucinda.
Lucinda- Cardenio’s lover who is stolen by Don Fernando and after her marriage runs away to be a nun but is found and taken away by Don Fernando, at which point she decides to stop speaking. At the inn, she is returned to Cardenio.
Don Fernando- a wealthy nobel who befriends Cardenio, marries Dorotea, but then under the guise of helping Cardenio, steals Lucinda. When he meets everyone at the Inn, however, he gives up Lucinda to Cardenio and returns to his wife Dorotea.
Dorotea- the peasant wife of Don Fernando who after he leaves her for Lucinda runs away to hide in the mountains. She is found by Sancho, the priest, and the barber and is persuaded to disguise herself as Princess Micomicoma and request a boon from Don Quijote that he help her free her kingdom from a Giant as a ploy to get him to return home. When the stop at the inn she is reunited with her husband.

Marcela- a beautiful and wealthy girl who takes on the role of shepherdess while she waits to find someone she loves. She has many suitors but rejects them all.
Gines de Pasamonte- a criminal on the way to the galleys who is freed by Don Quijote but proceeds to steal Sancho’s Donkey .
